Coaching Institute

MetamorphosisTLC goes beyond the scope and content of most educational coaching institutes. We situate coaching in the “big picture” of education in the 21st century and show you how to get the most leverage from coaching as a strategy for school improvement. We engage participants in cross role conversations that forge new partnerships between teachers, coaches and administrators. We engage attendees in deepening their content knowledge in two essential areas—math and literacy—and bring a laser-like focus to assessing effective instruction and learning. We not only develop the specific coaching skills needed for powerful one-on-one sessions that substantially improve learning, we also address in practical terms the most vexing questions coaches face in their day-to-day work including:

  • What is the role and purpose of the coach?
  • What is the role of the principal in terms of coaching?
  • What is the role of the teachers in relation to coaching?
  • What is the role of the district in relation to coaching?
  • How do school leaders and coaches cultivate a culture for coaching?
  • How is trust established between teachers and coaches?
  • How to use “mutual purpose” to establish the principal-coach partnership?
  • How to gain and maintain teacher trust while partnering with principals?
  • How to strategically select teachers for coaching to ensure lasting results?
  • How to determine the most important goals and starting places with teachers?
  • How long to work with each teacher and how many teachers one coach can work with effectively?
  • What should coaches do and not do?
  • What support do coaches need?
  • How to most effectively schedule the coach’s time?
  • What are the skills coaches need to know and/or learn?
  • What are the different coaching models, and how do I know which one to apply when?
  • Where do these models fit in the landscape of coaching at the school and district level?
  • How can teachers, coaches and principles use grade-level and other school meetings to foster a learning stance that focuses on instruction?

Three principal audiences are addressed:

Principals and District Administrators attending the Coaching Institute learn how to strategically utilize and support the work of coaches to cultivate professional practices, attitudes, and interactions that result in significantly improved student learning. Principals and administrators learn how to partner with coaches to germinate coherent cutting-edge instructional practices in all content areas and every classroom (not just the eager 20%). Scheduling, introduction of coaching to staff, strategic teacher selection for coaching and other germane topics are examined to ensure the greatest levels of success.

Coaches and Lead Teachers attending this course learn how to determine the level of content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of individual teachers—as well as the overall level prevalent within the school and district—and how to advance academic capacity. We offer specific tools and techniques for improving instruction and learning with individual and small groups of teachers. We show you how to partner with supervisors to cultivate communities of practice among all educators, and to cultivate teacher leaders who can support you as you strive to meet the professional learning needs of an entire faculty.

Teachers attending the MTLC Institute gain more robust content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge to use within their classrooms and with their colleagues. Teachers learn how to focus on the instructional core and engage in rigorous professional discourse with their colleagues that enhances their practice and impact on student performance.

To encourage a rich dialogue among educators, build a coherent image of effective teaching as evidenced in student learning, and establish robust communities of practice we recommend selecting high performing members from various departments and disciplines throughout the school and district to attend the Coaching Institute.
