Lucy West established MetamorphosisTLC after her outstanding run as Director of Mathematics Instruction in New York City’s Community School District 2. During its heyday District 2 was the district to emulate for innovative and cutting edge professional development practices that have now become household names—content coaching, walk throughs, professional learning communites, lesson study, to name a few. While representing District 2 in the creation of the Institute for Learning at the Learning Research and Development Center, University of Pittsburgh, she co-authored Content-Focused Coaching: Tranfroming Mathematics Lessons (see sidebar) with European researcher Fritz C. Staub, currently available in its 12th edition.
Ms. West is recognized internationally for her innovative, effective, and cutting edge ideas and proven practices for transforming schools into multi-generational learning communities that thrive in the 21st century. She is uniquely qualified to assist school districts across the country because she has worked at every level of the system from classroom teacher, to building administrator to curriculum coordinator to district administrator and as consultant to urban, suburban and rural districts.
Lucy returned to New York City’s public schools at the request of Shelley Harwayne, to serve as Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction K-12 for close to 200 schools in Region 9. After orchestrating many successful initiatives and partnerships for the region, Ms. West went on to partner with some of the most challenging urban systems in the country. The services provided by Ms. West have consistently received high praise from her clients and helped the adults and students to become more scholarly and inquisitive about teaching and learning—specifically mathematics and its potential for developing robust reasoning capacity.
Ms. West is a frequent presenter and/or keynote speaker at national and international conferences including but not limited to: Harvard Institute for School Leadership, NCSM, NCTM, ASCD, NSDC, EARLI, New Leaders for New Schools. She has been an instructor of mathematics education courses for Bank Street College of Education and CCNY’s Mathematics in The City Project.
She is presently working on two books—the first focuses on how to build collaborative coaching models that transform schools and districts and the second is an in-depth practical tool for cultivating robust classroom discourse that enhances student learning across all subject areas.
Her publications include:

Thank you for an inspiring day, rich with content and thought-provoking big ideas, and systemic ideas that inform culture.
Principal, NYC School
I always leave Lucy West workshops learning something new and feeling great about math! Thank you!.
Principal, NYC School
The workshop held today was so powerful! It felt like a consciousness raising experience for math teachers! Lucy West is gifted and shared so much. My classroom will look very different because of it. I hope that when the time comes, I will be able to share with my colleagues, as much as I have received from these conferences.
Steven Gilroy Achievement Coach for Instructional Initiatives Children First Network 207
Thank you for your wonderful facilitation at our retreat last week. Once again, you made quite an impression. It was a great dialogue with all in attendance....just what we wanted the day to look like.
You are humble and unassuming yet you certainly have drive and passion and people know what you stand for. You model the way in terms of saying "I don't know but let's find out." You remind us to be conscious about our teaching.
You certainly know how to make things compelling and the dissonance you create reminds us all about how important this profession is and to never lose sight that every child can succeed, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it happens.
Coordinator, SEF and Mathematics
Halton District School Board
Early on in my days I remember your work sessions and have reflected many times on those pivotal days which exposed me to the real foundation of leadership; a foundation many leaders today will never have. I wondered if I would ever be able to share with you how much you inspired me. It was that inspiration which made me want to be and do more.
Professionally, I thank you for investing in me and this school. Personally, I thank you for inspiring me. You are not only the reason this school is well developed, you are the reason this teacher is where she is today. I promise to, someday, reach a place to pass it on.
-Jennifer, Principal, NYC
As I reflect over the past few years of working with you, I become increasingly aware of the tremendous amount of knowledge I learned from you and the profound effect that working with you had on me as a teacher and coach. You are truly a master at what you do and I am so appreciative of all that you did for all of us here in Pinellas.
-Betsy, Coach, FL.
I valued Lucy’s straightforward style and passion for being a leader and influencing others’ teaching while at the same time showing respect for us and validating the work we already do in our current roles. I received more than I expected: validation of my own expertise and position, confidence to really ‘coach’ my colleagues and not be afraid to share my knowledge and ideas, new areas to focus on when coaching, and more concrete ideas as a coach to influence other and the culture of my school.
-Stacie Broden, Grade 2 Teacher and Math Instructional Leader
I valued Lucy’s honesty, receptiveness to what her audience was thinking and feeling, and all the materials that were willingly shared. I received a ton to think about when getting teachers to be reflective practitioners, lots of pedagogical moves, and great questions.
-Steven Madancy, Principal
I valued seeing a coaching session from beginning to end. Also, I feel more confident about what I have been doing as a coach after reading Lucy West’s book. I received a lot of concise tools and resources to develop as a math coach.
