Joan Backer has been committed to excellent teaching for close to forty years. She has been a welcome coach to teachers in various settings for the past 12 years. As a New York City public school teacher, she taught all grades from kindergarten through sixth, always bringing her love of learning into the classroom along with a sense of exploration and innovation. Joan envisions every coaching and classroom session as an opportunity for collaboration, conversation, and investigation.
She values teachers and students as learning and teaching partners, who create and synthesize big ideas by contributing their own thoughts and respectfully listening to the thoughts of others. As a student of the teaching of reading and writing, and then mathematics, Joan brings her understanding of the commonalities and connections in the learning of all subjects to her work.
