A national literacy consultant, speaker, author, and educator, Donna Santman is a much sought-after staff developer who works with schools and teachers across the country to help them create and implement constructivist workshop curricula. She has worked extensively in both urban and rural school districts, and has experience with public, independent and charter schools. Her book, Shades of Meaning: Comprehension and Interpretation in Middle School (Heinemann, 2005) is a widely-used guide for teaching students to independently and critically analyze texts. She is also co-author of A Teacher’s Guide to Standardized Reading Tests: Knowledge is Power (with Lucy Calkins, Kate Montgomery, and Beverly Falk: Heinemann, 1998), and of Music From the Inside Out, Music Literacy for Upper Elementary, Middle School and High School (Alfred Music Publishing, 2008), a curriculum that bridges her literacy work with music education. Donna is currently developing a set of classroom tools to help students develop the academic language to discuss the books they are reading.
Donna began her coaching career as a staff developer for the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project where she focused her attention on deepening the rigor in workshop classrooms. She is also a veteran literacy teacher and literacy coach, and taught for 10 years in New York’s District 2, at I.S. 89, a standards-based constructivist community.
