I valued seeing a coaching session from beginning to end. Also, I feel more confident about what I have been doing as a coach after reading Lucy West’s book. I received a lot of concise tools and resources to develop as a math coach.
-Kristen Keyser, Teacher
One of the most powerful best practices that we have experienced on our journey with Lucy and her colleagues is the development of coaching communities. Toni Cameron models the lesson design with a coach and coaches the coach while other coaches observe. To demonstrate powerful instructional strategies and coaching strategies, Toni and a coach co-teach while team members observe. These sessions are taped to allow teachers and coaches to reflect on their experiences. Toni has been a valuable resource for providing feedback to the coaches about their strengths and opportunities for growth.

I received information on theory and practice that helped me to better formulate my goals in the role of a math coach. I also received inspiration…Yes I can! I value the confidence I have gained, and the hope that change does happen through positive perseverance.
-Treva King, Math Specialist
Based on the training provided by Lucy and her staff, principals have begun to create schedules that promote the teaching of mathematics and to provide resources that support the math specialists, math facilitators, and teachers working collaboratively to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. Principals now turn to coaches and ask for assistance in identifying effective mathematics instruction.

I like the way you guided us through the knowledge-based, constructivist approach and then told us about it afterwards. Wow! The pacing was perfect. This is excellent information. Thank you for teaching this morning’s information to principals. The information was extremely helpful in supporting our jobs!

Where do we begin? As we reflect back on our journey this year, we do not know how to express our gratitude for your expertise and knowledge you have shared this year. You have and continue to challenge us to think critically about mathematics, our classroom practice and student development. We are looking forward to continuing on this journey next year.
-Kathy, Sharla, Andrea & Kari, Math Coordinator and Teacher Leaders, Canada
Wow! The principles of learning for effort-based education are such a great lens for looking at what we do in the classroom. I liked the focus on gathering evidence and finding a common goal as a starting point in the coaching process. Thanks!
