About us
Lucy West, founder and Executive Director of Metamorphosis Teaching Learning Communities, has been an innovator in the development and implementation of research-based educational coaching, lesson studies and professional communities of practice designed to professionalize teaching and improve student learning and achievement from Kindergarten through High School since 1993. She is a highly acclaimed author whose seminal book, Content-Focused Coaching: Transforming Mathematics Lessons, set a high standard for educational coaches and is used by districts nationwide and in Canada to guide their coaching initiatives.

Having established a revolutionary new approach to developing coaches and teacher leaders, Lucy West, assembled a team of Master Coaches with over 100 years combined educational coaching experience to spread the transformative power of Content-Focused Coaching. Metamophosis consultants partner with teachers, coaches and administrators in districts across the United States and Canada to develop high-leverage, systematic deployment of content coaches. They systematically build the capacity of in-house professionals to substantively improve teaching and learning system-wide in sustainable ways.

MetamorphosisTLC systems-approach to focusing administrative policies and procedures on the instructional core inspires and equips educators at all levels to optimize performance throughout entire school communities. Our work has transformed the mindset and practice of both teachers and administrators, and affirmed them as professionals who can uplift entire school cultures. Our collaborative hands-on approach gives them the skill and confidence to make lasting improvements in the lives of their students. We believe in the synergistic—multiplier effect—of sharing collective knowledge among teaching professionals for the greater good. We design experiences to call forth the genius in the individual for the benefit of the whole.

We view educators as professionals who can uplift entire school cultures and make lasting improvements in the lives of their students when they collaborate in professional communities of practice. In our work with educators, we focus on cultivating pedagogical content knowledge to inform, energize and impassion teachers. Our Master Coaches co-create learning environments where educators of all levels and experience are engaged to share and learn together to incorporate innovative approaches that improve academic performance. We believe in the synergetic—multiplier effect—of collective knowledge shared among teaching professionals for the greater good.

As facilitators, MTLC Master Coaches provide powerful tools that help educators:

  • Get past the “politeness norm” and engage in robust professional discourse. Discourse that enables teachers and supervisors to probe deeply into the impact on learning of teaching practices to make real improvements in instruction.
  • Develop a “lens” for informally assessing student learning during class sessions to drive more effective, student centered and differentiated lesson design.
  • Initiate frank, honest and substantive dialog that unearths “limiting beliefs,” such as, “These kids can’t learn,” or, “They’ll never get it,” or, “We don’t have time for student discourse,” and transform them into clear, high expectations.
  • Cultivate trust in student capacity that overcomes instructors’ predispositions and provide strategies that develop students’ ability to manage their own learning.

Content-Focused Coaching is a long-range, capacity building, professional development practice in which our coaches work with individuals and groups to design, implement, and reflect on rigorous, standards-based lessons that promote student learning through improved instruction.

Find out how Master Coaches move an entire school or district to perform at higher and more satisfying levels of professionalism and significantly raise student achievement.

Over the last three years I’ve learned a lot, but
I like the way you really keep coming back to
the same essential ideas because each time I
re-visit, I see them from the perspective of my newest experiences. Thanks, as always, for helping us help our students become serious mathematicians!
